Why do people share secrets with the premise "just don't tell anyone", and then before you have a chance to respond, they blurt it out?

I think everyone has a secret of some kind, I just wonder sometimes what compels people to divulge their secrets.
Oh...thank you so much for this entry. It is beautiful. It touched me in so many ways...I mean...I've been thinking about secrets all day. Your posting of this was very timely. My inner child (Ndugu) told me to tell something on this blog...something revealing.
